ETHZ

16: Institute of Cartography, ETH Zurich (CH)

The Institute of Cartography at ETH Zurich, founded in 1925 by Eduard Imhof, is the oldest academic institute in this domain world-wide.

The institute developed a long tradition in cartographic relief representation, topographic and thematic cartography, map design and atlas cartography (school atlases, national atlases). These domains are still considered the main fields of application, but adapted to new demands, media and technologies. It is the intention to continue this tradition of striving for high quality maps also under the promising prospects of digital cartography.

In recent years, the institute focused more and more on modern interactive CD-ROM and web-based multimedia map information systems, Atlas Information Systems (AIS) for environmental applications, distributed cartographic interfaces (including Web Map Services), geospatial standards and 3D Visualizations.

E-learning and training activities are also areas where the Institute of Cartography is very active.
In the last 5 years, the institute has built up state-of-the-art and leading know-how in e-learning applications mainly in relation to GI.

Role in SANY IP:

ETHZ is involved in “SP7: community building and standardization”, with the task of developing multimedia training units based on ELML (E-learning markup language, ) that will help to maximize the exploitation of SANY results.

ETHZ, as the e-learning expert within SANY project, contributes its know-how in didactic, e-learning, and the knowledge of ELML xml dialect. A list of relevant projects includes:

  • Swiss Virtual Campus project GITTA (Geographic Information Technology Training Alliance): Establishment of a distance learning course on GIT, using XML content specifications, finally leading to the ELML standard
  • Swiss Virtual Campus project NAHRIS (Dealing with Natural Hazards and Risk): Establishment of a distance learning course on Natural Hazards
  • Swiss Virtual Campus project CARTOUCHE (Cartography for Higher Education in Switzerland): Establishment of a distance learning course on Multimedia Cartography, 3D-Cartography and Location Based Services
  • ETH-funded project GeoVite: Development of a 300 GB database driven geodata repository and portal for ETH Zurich, coupled with an e-learning tutorial
