SANY Newsletter 10: From GIS & Sensor Data to Web Maps (Zürich, 3 and 6 April 2009)Dear reader,
LINK: Bibliography section on SANY-IP On 3-rd and 6-th of April, SANY Partner ETHZ will organise two additional hands-on trainings dedicated to publication and visualization of the sensor data on the Web with the "Map and Diagram Service". Training: From GIS & Sensor Data to Web Maps
This hands-on training will cover the complete cartographic workflow for the Web:
map service creation with "Publish to Web" plugin; advanced representation with cartographic rules; creating more expressive maps with cartographic rules defining patterns for spatial features, SVG point symbols, and diagrams; accessing and symbolizing sensor data with colour maps and contours The training will take place at the Institute of Cartography, ETH Zurich VENUE: http://www.karto.ethz.ch/about/howtofind/index_EN The software used during the training is free (open source) and can be taken home by participants at the end of the day. A first one-day training possibility is offered on the 3rd of April 2009 (03/04/2009) and a second option is the 6th of April 2009 (06/04/2009), both days from 9:00 to 17:00. The maximal number of participants is limited to 20 (10 on the first day and 10 on the second day). Training is free of charge, within the limit of available places. Participants are kindly asked to register per e-mail and organise their own accommodation. REGISTRATION: First training session (03.04.2009) Map and Diagram service (M&D) is one of the services SensorSA "inherited" from ORCHESTRA IP. It extends the standard OGC Web Map Service (WMS) with functions that allow superposing various statistic information on the geographic maps. Map and Diagram Service can be used with standard WMS clients, in which case the diagrams presentations are configured on the server. Dedicated M&D client applications, can also send the diagram-related configuration to M&D server as be a part of request. The M&D reference implementation of the M&D service is called "QGIS mapserver", publisehd under GPL license, and available for download on the following web site: LINK: QGIS mapserver "QGIS mapserver" is quite mature compared with the service prototypes that were started from scratch in SANY-IP, and an interesting alternative to open source Web Map servers. Of course, the usual disclaimer applies: "this software is provided as is with no waranty, etc., etc.". Sensors Anywhere Integrated Project (SANY IP) is an FP6 Integrated Project (contract number 0033564) co-funded by the Information Society and Media DG of the European Commission within the RTD activities of the Thematic Priority Information Society Technologies. SANY newsletter is the main external communication medium of the SANY project. Its aim is to inform the decision makers, fellow researches, producers and users of environmental information systems and all other people interested in the subject of environmental monitoring on the progress of the project and on events organized by the SANY consortium. SANY newsletters are archived on the SANY web-page: LINK: SANY Newsletter archive |
